A travertine plate. Twenty-eight centimetres across, eighteen millimetres deep. The edge is named for the architectural moulding. Under sidelight, it casts a thin shadow that defines the form.

Each piece is its own

Travertine forms slowly, layer on layer, around mineral springs. The pattern of open pores, the streaks where iron and other minerals settled, the rhythm of light and dark, none of it can be predicted before the slab is cut. We do not sort or select for uniformity. Your piece will have its own pattern, different from the photograph, different from the next one. This is what stone offers, a material that refuses to be made identical.

What it is for

A plate for what the day asks. Cheese and crackers in the evening. Stone fruit on a summer table. Olives and bread before dinner. A jewellery tray on a dresser holding rings, earrings, a watch. A catch-all by the front door for keys and mail. Some owners keep it permanently as a low sculptural object with nothing on it. Used or empty, the form holds.

Where it works

Kitchen island for service. Sideboard for display. Coffee table as a low anchor. Travertine is durable enough for daily use, but the open pores can hold liquid. Protect against red wine, oil, and dark vinegar.

Pairs with

The Waitākere bowl on the same surface for height variation. The Newel spheres as small forms nearby. The Joint or Oculus as sculptural companions.

In the box

One plate. 280 mm diameter, 18 mm depth. Approximately 2.4 kg. Beige Italian travertine, open-pored.

Caring for travertine

Wipe with a damp cloth. Mild dish soap if needed. Avoid acidic cleaners. Wipe spills promptly. The open pores absorb dark liquids. For deeper protection, a stone-safe sealer applied annually keeps the pores closed.
